Ubuntu Fix: How to Stop gvfsd-metadata Using 100% CPU:

October 14, 2011 by Ubuntu Genius

If your Ubuntu system is slowly grinding to a halt, and you manage to pull up the System Monitor and see that gvfsd-metadata is using 100% of the CPU, here’s how to correct it. In a terminal run the following 2 commands:

rm -rf ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata
pkill gvfsd-metadata

Your system should now be back to normal.

This does not fix the problem… it only cleans up the current mess, and at the earliest opportunity, the system will return everything to where it was before removing the directory and issuing the pkill.

If you wish to prevent this from happening again, you must prevent gvfsd-metadata from ever running again. To do this:

sudo chmod -x /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-metadata

An unfortunate side-effect of doing either this, or the ‘remove directory and pkill’ method, is that your settings for directory windows and desktop icon positions is never saved. This may get annoying, but in my opinion, nowhere near as annoying as the CPU pegging and preventing any work from getting done at all.

Hopefully this gets properly fixed once and for all very soon… it still isn’t as of 14.04 that I can tell, and I haven’t checked 14.10 yet.
